Integrating NOAA Science into Classrooms
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is partnering with the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) and the U.S. Department of Education to implement high quality, watershed-focused science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education at 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) program sites. This nationwide partnership will reach a minimum of 60 21st CCLC program sites each year, primarily in geographic areas served by the NOAA Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) program. Participating students will have opportunities to actively explore and better understand their aquatic ecosystem during out-of-school time.
Watershed STEM Education projects will use the NOAA B-WET program's Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE) model. The MWEE is the core B-WET program experience, based on research, evaluation results, and lessons learned from over a decade of program implementation. Students at 21st CCLC sites will work directly with scientists around the country to increase their understanding of watersheds and related ecosystems as well as strategies to help protect and restore these aquatic environments.
