Introduction to 21st Century Community Learning Centers

This overview will acquaint you with the history and legal basis for the Nita M. Lowey 21st CCLC Grant Program, and reveal the program’s powerful impact on students, families and communities.

Chapter 1 provides an overview of the purposes and goals of Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers programs, their history and evolution, and how programs benefit students, families and schools.

Chapter 2 presents the federal legislation, regulations and guidance that direct all 21st CCLC grant programs, emphasizes the role of state guidance and requirements when applying for and administering a grant program, and walks you through how to apply each of these resources when it’s time to write your grant proposal and design your program.

- Identify the program’s benefits to students, families and schools.
- Describe 21st CCLC federal guidance and requirements.
- Identify the importance of state guidance and requirements.
Implementation Strategies
Estimated time to complete: 5-7 hours
Upon completion, you will receive an Advanced Level certificate of completion.
Find strategies to design and plan for a 21st Century Community Learning Center, including reviewing your state’s request for proposal, gathering stakeholders, determining your needs and goals, creating a plan and budget, staffing, recruiting students and implementing your program activities.

- Identify the key strategies for planning and designing a high-quality 21st CCLC program.
- Incorporate the key strategies and federal, state and local laws, regulations, and guidance into your 21st CCLC program plan and design.
